Welcome to the ninth volume of Morning Pages, a newsletter sharing inspirations at the intersection of culture and identity, creative experiments, and occasional studio updates.
It’s been a long and emotional week. I’ll never forget this moment in history and the dialogues that I’ve had this week. My heart still feels heavy and I still get emotional thinking about what this win means for people of color and immigrants.
I thought about many different topics to write about for this week. In the end, I decided to keep it simple this time.
Hope unites us all.
Zhang Yu: A multi-disciplinary artist in China. She combines traditional Chinese ink painting with meticulous brushwork and heavy colors. The vivid and dynamic characters as well as the colliding colors made her otherworldly paintings splendid and beautiful. Her transcendent ink paintings have appeared in many films and televisions in China.
Zhang Yu spent lots of time studying the Mogao Cave fresco paintings at Dunhuang.
The biggest shock of my life is there. The aesthetics of each period in history are particularly interesting. These ancient paintings are not just superficial materialization. You can also see the differences and similarities in preferences and aesthetics.
Critics have described Zhang Yu’s work as “the new Chinese ink painting.” They are dynamic, free, and majestic. Her work expresses a wild and unruly atmosphere. The delicate and subtle brushstroke details reflect her prolific artistic foundation.

so that one day
a hundred years from now
another sister will not have to
dry her tears wondering
where in history
she lost her voice
